Label TextCy Twombly’s interest in calligraphy and Surrealist automatic handwriting remains an underlying theme in his art work and is vividly exemplified in this extraordinary tour-de-force of printmaking. Coiled line here suggests the flow of handwriting, encompassing space and suggesting movement, time, and mood. Twombly’s rare, beautiful use of open-bite aquatint, characteristic of the graffiti-like vocabulary Twombly has been using since the 1950s, documents his admitted predilection for paper rather than canvas. The density and richness of the aquatint texture make this one of his most successful prints.Exhibition HistoryPrints-Print Makers Feb. 20-June 9, 1996 TMA Contempary Prints: 8/17-10/30/83 & 1/14 - 2/26/84 TMA Contempary Realistic Prints: Mar. 17, - June 3, 1984
