Label TextPrinted on black German etching paper, this print was produced in five shades of gray from 12 lithographic plates at Universal Limited Art Editions. Corpse and Mirror is the third print in a series that Jasper Johns made after a 1974 painting of the same name. The cross-hatching pattern, meant to be reminiscent of paving stones, is a recurring theme in Johns’ paintings and prints and is a provocative and enigmatic continuation of the artist’s exploration of the relationship between the idea of reality, illusion, and perceptual expectation. This etching is extraordinary in its exploitation of the rich nuances possible in the lithographic process and in the probing reexamination of the artist's own aesthetic concerns.Exhibition HistoryToledo Museum of Art, Jasper Johns: Master Printmaker, Aug. 15 - Nov. 11, 2001.
