Label TextCombining expressive draftsmanship, tradition, and modernism, Susan Rothenberg conveys a sense of energetic motion. Her bright colors and sense of light evoke her acknowledged debt to 19th-century Impressionist painters such as Claude Monet. Yet she strives for something expressive of our fast-paced contemporary life. Her early work explored her interest in motion with figures of athletes, dancers, and acrobats. Here the sense of motion seems to dissolve into pure energy, though there is still a suggestion of figures somersaulting and tumbling. Rothenberg’s dazzling brush strokes, bold line, and use of color create a visceral, kinetically charged image.Published ReferencesInspired Giving: The Apollo Society 25th Anniversary Exhibition, Toledo Museum of Art, 2010, repr.
