Label TextAlthough Aldus Manutius devoted most of his attention to publishing scholarly texts in clear, unadorned typography, he was responsible for one of the most beautiful early illustrated books -- the only Italian illustrated book to match what was being done in Germany at that time. HY&PNEROTOMACHIA POLIPHILI was realized in an elegant newly designed type face (by Francesco da Bologna, called Griffo) and exquisite woodcuts (by an unknown artist), which harmoniously complemented the lines of type. The love story "The Strife of Love in a Dream", is attributed to Francesco Colonna, a Dominican monk. These pages convey some of the book's grace and charm, and attest to the versatility of Aldus as printer and designer.
