Label TextPARALLELEMENT ("In a parallel way") was the first book publication by the art dealer Vollard, and it has become the first great LIVRE d"ARTISTTE of the twentieth century. Regarded as an epoch-making achievement in the art of the French illustrated book, Bonnard's inspired lithographs freely flowed over the margins and infringed on the lines of type thus uniting poetry and image in an innovative way. Bonnard's exuberant drawings, printed in a delectable rose-pink color, underscored the sensuality of Verlaines poetry. The museum's deluxe copy of this important and beautiful book from the Bareiss collection has been lent to the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art's Pierre Bonnard exhibition (which travels to Houston), so only the prospectus is shown here. On the left is the illustration for the poem "Ballade de la Mauvaise Reputation," found on page 130 in the book.
