Label TextMantegna, and not his assistants, actually engraved the plate used to produce this print. The heavy incising of the contours and internal outlines of the figures, along with the parallel lines used for shading, was a distinctive technique of the artist. This print probably dates around 1472, when the church in Mantua, dedicated to St. Andrew, began restoration. The church held two extremely important relics associated with the Crucifixion, brought to Mantua by St. Longinus.Published ReferencesBartsch 6.
