Label TextAndré Masson had lived in Spain from 1934 through the beginning months of the Spanish Civil War. Like many Surrealists, he was virulently anti-Fascist and anti-Franco. In 1938, he contributed to this album to raise money for the orphans of the Spanish Civil War. His etching vividly captures the idea of civil war in this image of a dove blinding itself with its own claw. By appending a sharpened swastika to the attacking claw, Masson reminds us of the crucial support of Nazi Germany to Franco’s insurrection.Exhibition HistoryBetween the Wars; Sept. 5 2008 through Dec.31 2008
