Label TextSmall Worlds VII is from a portfolio of 12 abstract compositions, each employing a specific printmaking technique. As Kandinsky explained in the portfolio’s introduction, he used drypoint to represent passion and haste, etching to show precision, woodcut to show the interplay of background and foreground, and lithography—as in this print—to resemble painting. Kandinsky placed each shape, line, and color to interact among themselves, generating tension, emotion, and meaning through these abstract means. He added color, shading, and texture to bring the shapes to the surface or to push them to the background. Each print represents an autonomous microcosm, a reflection of Kandinsky’s view of the cosmos.Exhibition HistoryToledo Museum of Art, European Expressionist and Cubist Works on Paper: 1900-1930, December 2, 2011-March 11, 2012 (University of Toledo Student Exhibition).
