Label TextIn this, the largest of Dürer’s engravings, St. Eustace, a general under the Emperor Trajan, is shown experiencing a vision of a Crucifix—Jesus crucified on the cross—between the horns of a stag. During the early years of the 16th century, Dürer immersed himself in the exploration of textures. In this print he contrasted the rough fur of the dogs to the sleekness of the horse, and the gnarled bark of the trees with the soft leaves and grass. The copper plate used to produce this print was so large that Dürer is said to have experienced trouble printing an even impression.Published References"Treasures for Toledo," TOLEDO MUSEUM NEWS, "New Series, Vol. 7, No. 4, Winter 1964, repr. p. 84 (also published as handbook) TMA, A Guide to the Collections, Toledo, 1966, repr.
