Label TextThe nighttime effects achieved by Charles Meryon in this print create a mysterious mood, especially in concert with the steeply pitched Gothic architecture. Meryon's Eaux-fortes sur Paris (Prints of Paris) were exhibited in the Salon in the early 1850s. They were immediately recognized as masterworks and sealed Meryon's place as a leader in the etching revival of the mid-19th century.Exhibition HistoryToledo Museum of Art, Whistler: Influences, Friends, and the Not-So-Friendly, Feb. 26 - May 30, 2010.
