Label TextDeucalion was the son of Prometheus and the eventual king of Thessaly. Deucalion was instructed by Zeus to build an ark in anticipation of a great flood. For 10 days he and his wife Pyrrha floated on the flood waters. When the waters receded, Deucalion and Pyrrha were instructed by an oracle to repopulate the earth:“Veil your heads, remove the girdles of your robes, and cast behind you the bones of your ancestors.” The “bones” were the stones of mother Earth.Exhibition HistoryTMA, The Dramatic Image: Baroque Prints of the 17th Century, February 25 - July 31, 2011.
