Label TextThe artist, Fritz Eichenberg, is best known for works concerning religion, social injustice, and nonviolence. He immigrated to the United States from Berlin in 1933. Although non-religious, his Jewish heritage and his criticism of the Nazis made life untenable in his native country. In this country he attained a strong reputation as an educator and author and book illustrator. His masterful wood engravings were used to illustrate books by Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, and Poe, among others.
