Exhibition HistoryTMA Recent Acquisitions, Prints, Photographs and Drawings : April 1979 Mar. - Apr.,1979Label TextIn sensitive composition of three women picking apples, Clarence H. White creates a beautiful arrangement of forms on the surface of the picture, as well as the painterly evocation of space. The Orchard expresses the turn-of-the-century artistic sensibility influenced by artist James McNeill Whistler and Japanese prints. White and other founding members of the Photo-Secession created works full of poetry and allegory in softly focused compositions. Many of their images were reproduced as photogravures in Camera Work, published by Alfred Steiglitz. A photo-mechanical reproductive technique that involves exposing a film positive on a copper plate coated with light-sensitive gel, photogravures very effectively duplicate the subtle light and shadowy atmosphere of the original platinum prints.- Works on Paper
