Label TextLouise Dahl-Wolfe was noted for her strong figural compositions in her fashion and portrait work for Harper’s Bazaar from 1936 to 1958,. In the studio she sometimes created a narrative for her images—occasionally a surreal one—and learned through experience how to use lighting to contrast form and accentuate shape. Her creative placement of the models and props within the frame of the composition was a product of her education at the California School of Fine Arts, where she studied anatomy, drawing, and design. Outside of the studio her work was generally casual and elegant, a product of ‘The New American Look’, where active women replaced staged glamour. In this photograph light and a shadow cast by a lace hat create a surreal composition on the nude body of the model.Published Referencesoriginally catalogued by MS 10/85Exhibition HistoryTMA, Jan 22 - June 8, 1999
