Exhibition HistoryToledo Museum of Art, Travelers Through Ancient Lands, Sept. 10 - Feb. 6, 2011 (no cat.).Label TextFélix Bonfils traveled extensively in the Middle East taking photographs of Egypt, Nubia, Palestine, Syria, Greece, and Asia Minor. He produced a five-volume book, Souvenirs d’Orient in 1878, and records show that he had a total of 1,680 photographs available for purchase in 1888. It is estimated that his total lifetime publication numbered over ten thousand images. He was particularly known for his genre scenes, and the catalogue published in 1888 offered a choice of more than 300 “costumes, scenes and characters of Egypt, Palestine and Syria.” This photograph of Jews at the Wailing Wall, Jerusalem, is a poignant, yet typical, Bonfils study of life in the Holy Land.- Works on Paper
