Label TextElliott Erwitt is very casual about his photographic career. When asked why he choose photography Erwitt answered, “I was interested in making a living in the least painful way I could figure out. It seemed like a good way because you could be your own person, your own boss, pick your own times.” Although the photo historian John Szarkowski characterized Erwitt’s style as “The Indecisive Moment,” Erwitt is known for his ability to capture candid shots of ironic, absurd, and in this case, poignant scenes. Indeed, his photographs often reflect his great admiration for the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson, the master of the “Decisive Moment.”
