Label TextJoseph Pennell was born in Philadelphia and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He often worked as a book illustrator and his prints of scenery, interiors, and individuals established his reputation internationally. Pennell spent much of his working life in Europe and befriended Whistler while living in England. Whistler's influence can be seen in many of Pennell's prints. This print owes a great deal to Whistler's Nocturnes that are displayed nearby. Pennell became an influential lecturer and critic, writing or illustrating more than a hundred books, including a biography of Whistler. Whistler helped Pennell and his wife immeasurably with notes, clippings, and recollections in the writing of the book. The Life of James McNeill Whistler was published in 1908, five years after Whistler's death.Exhibition HistoryTMA, Whistler: Influences, Friends, and the Not-So-Friendly, Feb. 26 - May 30, 2010.
