Label TextWinslow Homer adapted this print of three young boys at a lush fishing hole—published in Harper’s Weekly in its August 22, 1874 issue—from a watercolor that he likely painted at the marshy site of Mink Pond in the Adirondacks. After the Civil War, the Adirondacks saw an influx of middle-class tourist families to the region, who visited to enjoy its natural beauty and recreational opportunities. Homer was known for his mastery of wood-engraving and his ability to create tonal values and the effects of light and shadow through the use of line. In Waiting for a Bite, he even incorporated the texture and pattern of the wood grain itself.Membership
