Label TextIn the foreword to this charming publication, artist Antonio Frasconi, who grew up in Uruguay along the La Plata River, writes of the childhood memory that inspired the book: “The Río de la Plata held a constant fascination for me and, particularly, I found a great deal of excitement in watching the migrations of hundreds of birds as they arrived or took leave of their sanctuary for warmer waters.” William Henry Hudson was an Argentine-born ornithologist who published a two-volume handbook on the birds of La Plata in 1920. Frasconi used Hudson’s descriptions of the birds to accompany his colorful woodcuts.Exhibition HistoryToledo Museum of Art, For the Birds, April 13-October 14, 2012.
