Exhibition Historythe Modern Woodcut Toledo Museum of Art, Werner Pfeiffer Selects, Feb. 13-May 10, 2015.Label TextFull of nostalgia and symbolism, Poems without Words gave Vaily Kandinsky a vehicle for expressing his feelings about his native Russia. Kandinsky had settled in Munich and attempted to write verse in German, but was frustrated at his inability to effectively express himself in the language. For this book he compensated by producing images of idealized landscapes, social gatherings, and studies of onion-dome architecture—conveying his emotions and sentiments through images alone. Many of the motifs created for this book continued to appear in Kandinsky’s later artwork. For example, the horse and rider imagery, symbolic of a warrior for new art, shows up often in subsequent art, including Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) nearby.- Works on Paper
