Label TextPrinting at Wittenberg received its impetus just before 1520 from the presence of Martin Luther. Some of his religious tracts were published there around this time, and several of them included woodcut illustrations by Lucas Cranach the elder. Lucas Cranach the Younger learned print making from his father, and eventually succeeded him as head of the Cranach workshop. This book "The Art of Wrestling is the earliest book on the subject, and it is an exceptional secular work at a time when most books were religious in nature. The woodcut illustrations include a portrait of the author, the auther's coat of arms, and 85 wrestling stances and grips.Exhibition HistoryTMA The Painter Was a Printmaker: June 23 - Sept. 9, 1984
