DescriptionThis glass has a frosted background and displays motifs of horses and jockeys as seen at the annual Kentucky Derby in KY. The architectural background is iconic to the location of the race with the white steeples of Churchill Downs standing over the race. The red rose, the official flower of the derby since 1904, signifies the rose garland that is placed
on the winning jockey and horse. Commemorating the 1988 Derby, this collectible glass would have been used to house the traditional drink of the race, a mint julep (promoted as the official drink since 1938).The first of these commemorative glasses were used in 1939 and have been used since. Each historic frosted glass lists all previous Derby winners, as seen in this example from 1988.
The glass is inscribed as ©1987 Churchill Downs Incorporated and was produced by Libbey Glass Company for the 1988 Kentucky Derby 114.
