Label Text:Edward Ruscha (pronounced Roo-SHAY) is an influential voice in American painting and one of the most significant contemporary American graphic artists. He created a new paradigm for interactions between the artist, the book, and the audience beginning in 1962 when he published small, inexpensive paperbacks that constructed a linear sequence of photo images of ordinary places and things—like every building along the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. Important in the production of many of his books is his ability to interpret the sprawl of L. A., evoking presence and absence through photographic repetition. It is fitting that the sequencing of the images is reminiscent of cinematic film.
