Label Text:Artist, designer, and poet William Morris founded the English Arts & Crafts movement in 1861. The movement called for the revival and promotion of historical craft-based techniques to produce household goods in response to the dehumanizing consequences of the Industrial Revolution. This book was published by the Kelmscott Press, which Morris had established in 1891 to revive the traditional craft of printing, looking to manuscript illumination from the Middle Ages for inspiration. Morris modeled the book’s hand-cut typefaces on medieval fonts, made the paper in the manner of the 15th century, and printed the edition by hand to create a beautifully made and harmonious work. The interlace ornament is based on abstracted designs from nature and is used sparingly, appearing within the ornamented initial letters around the borders of two pages.
