Label Text:Born in Menlo Park, California, in 1970, Kristin Satzman discovered her love for photography while attending the University of California at Santa Cruz. After graduating with a BFA in 1992, she traveled and photographed in the United States for three years. Upon returning to California she moved to San Francisco.

Impressed at a young age by C. S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Satzman has always enjoyed seeking out hidden places. This photograph comes from a series that developed out of a three-year exploration of urban parks and gardens in the San Francisco Bay Area. Having learned from photographers like Edward Weston that it’s the light more than the object being shot that makes a photograph work, she is keenly aware of the coastal climate and the unique light that surrounds her.
