Label Text:What gives this painting its glossy, radiant quality? Instead of the more common canvas or wood, it was painted on a sheet of porcelain. The image is a copy after a painting by the Italian artist Titian from about 1516, today at the Louvre Museum in Paris. Over time the colors of Titian’s painting had faded, which is not unusual for a painting of its age. The preservation of paintings was a concern for artists and art administrators in the early 1800s. Painting on porcelain had the distinct advantage that colors would never fade because the pigments would form a permanent bond with the ceramic when fired in a kiln.

Marie-Victoire Jaquotot was one of the most accomplished and successful porcelain painters and ran her own workshop where she specialized in copies after well-known paintings. She also taught other women the art of porcelain painting.
