Label Text:Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian’s complex drawings reflect the influence of both Iran’s traditional artforms and the pictorial language of 20th-century abstract art. Growing up in Iran, she first came to the United States in 1945m staying until1957 to complete her studies. She spent an additional 25 years in New York after the start of the Iranian Revolution in 1979. Fluctuating between both cultures has informed her use of Islamic design’s mathematical principles to build intricate patterns based on geometric abstraction.

These experiences have also led to her multimedia approach, in which two- and three-dimensional materials and techniques inform each other. Indicative of this reciprocal relationship, Untitled utilizes the reflective properties of glitter to draw a parallel between her drawing and large-scale mirror mosaic sculptures. Developing both practices in tandem, Monir’s visual language explores variations on line and shape, with her drawings presenting possibilities for multiple patterns and geometries similar to her sculptures.
