DescriptionKnown for her emotive works deeply rooted in art history’s visual language, Nicole Eisenman ceased painting in 2012 to devote herself entirely to printmaking for eight months. The lithographs she created during this period, such as Sloppy Barroom Kiss, combine her exploration of current popular culture with the style and innovative printmaking techniques developed by German Expressionist artists such as Edvard Munch and Max Beckmann. Here, Eisenman’s homage to Munch effectively translates his themes of death and sexuality into a comedic scene of night drinking in a NYC hipster bar and fits into her larger body of work that explores bar encounters and dinner scenes.
