Label Text:German-born artist Anja Isphording draws closely from nature to create forms characterized by their texture and saturated color. Isphording resists directly defining her work; she does not have an artistic statement explaining her thoughts and she identifies her works of art with numbers rather than descriptive titles. In this way, she creates a space for the work to speak for itself, inviting the viewer’s own interpretation. Working from her own observational drawings, Isphording hand-molds each piece in beeswax before casting it in pâte de verre—a glass paste made of ground glass frit and a binding agent.
DescriptionThe sculpture is a conical form that is adorned with a networked grid of glass thorns on the entire body. The base layer of glass protrusions is a fiery orange hue that begins in the middle of the form and is dense at the tip. Charcoal toned glass is used over the orange glass and is dense at the base and extends up the into thin vertical lines.
