Label Text:British Pop artist Peter Phillips draws on the visual language of American consumer culture and mass media, from automobiles to pin-up models. He then fragments, reorganizes, and combines the graphic imagery into bold, dynamic compositions.

Modernist critics were horrified by Pop artists’ use of “low” subject matter and their seeming acceptance of this “lowbrow” culture. But prompted by Pop’s emotional remove and the rise of feminism, scholars still debate if these artists accepted or were critiquing popular culture, such as the objectification of women, which is arguably present in this work.
