Loose gatherings (unsigned, 12 2--274 28--292) laid into tan wove paper wrappers letterpress printed in black with text in French and the triangular Maillot woodcut. The text, woodcut, and layout are same as those on the wrappers for the TMA copy of the French edition, but the type is a variant setting. Both the French wrappers and the unbound state of the gatherings differ from Rewald’s description of the English edition as having been issued bound in vellum. The suite of woodcuts, proofs and drawings is laid into a tan wove paper portfolio with three flaps. On the inner flap in black ink: Suite de l’exemplaire no. 1 (UNIQUE) | contenant: | 2 dessins originaux | 7 Bon-à-tirer.

The book and suite are housed in a chemise and slipcase, both covered with coated white paper embossed to imitate morocco; the chemise is lined with white laid paper. The slipcase fore-edges and chemise spine are covered with vellum-like paper.

Contents of suite of prints in black on Montval laid paper---the woodcuts are numbered in pencil on the versos, corresponding page in the book, title (from Rewald) image size (all sheets approx. 7 7/8 x 5 1/8" (200 x 130 mm) untrimmed), Rewald number:

Also in the suite, two original, signed drawings by Maillol in sanguine pencil, very close copies of the corresponding woodcuts. Both drawings are on laid paper:

79.28c, p. 211: "Daphnis and Chloe in the cave of the nymphs," sheet: 5 1/8 x 7 1/2" (130 x 191 mm).

Three alternate versions for illustrations, on the same paper as the suite, with same sheet dimensions:
79.28bbb, p. 22: "Daphnis playing his pipe for Chloe," image: 3 7/8 x 3 7/8" (98 x 98 mm), Rewald 76 (border roughed out but surrounding block not yet cut away).
79.28ccc, p. 157: "Daphnis puts the apple into Chloe’s bosom," image: 3 1/2 x 3 7/16" (89 x 87 mm), Rewald 112.
79.28ddd, p. 211: "Daphnis and Chloe lying naked together," image: 2 3/4 x 3 7/8" (70 x 98 mm), Rewald 124.

Five woodcut proofs on china paper, designated "bon à tirer" by Maillol in pencil, l.l., and signed by him with his monogram, l.r.:
79.28b, p. 22: "Daphnis playing his pipe for Chloe," Rewald 76.**
79.28h, p. 80: "Daphnis and Chloe embrace one another," Rewald 93.**
79.28, p. 102: "Syrinx disappears in a grove of reeds," Rewald 100.**
79.28i, p. 120: "Daphnis and Chloe in Dryas’ house," Rewald 105.
79.28j, p. 133: "Lycænium teaches Daphnis the secrets of love", Rewald 108.

Two proofs on china paper before the excess surrounding block had been cut away, signed by Maillol in pencil with his monogram, l.r.:
79.28d, p. 179: "Daphnis plays to his goats," block: 5 7/8 x 4" (148 x 102 mm), Rewald 119.
79.28e, colophon: "Chloe bathing in the cave of the nymphs," block: 3 7/8 x 6 1/4" (98 x 158 mm), Rewald 126 (this copy is also monogrammed upside-down by Maillol, t.l.).

* The line border is not part of the woodcut block: it is not present in the suite, its dimensions differ from those in the book or from the prints in the French edition and/or suite.
** Variant images, unless otherwise noted, variants are confined to the border thickness, with the line borders in the suite thicker than those in the book.
‡ Variant images to the French edition and and its suite of plates, as a rule, recutting or repairs to the block. From the variants presented between the English suite and edition and the French suite and edition, it seems likely that the prints in the suite accompanying the English edition represent earliest states of the woodcuts in the group, followed by the prints in the English edition, and then by the French edition and suite.
