Label Text:Natalia Goncharova created this album shortly after the outbreak of World War I in August 1914 and the dispatch of Mikhail Larionov, her companion, to the front. Inspired by Russian military successes at the beginning of the war and the upsurge of Russian patriotism, Goncharova presents war in apocalyptic and nationalistic terms as a divinely protected endeavor, guided by the interventions of heavenly angels and Russian saints. With charged references to icons and popular religious prints, she expresses her fears of war's devastation and her fervent hopes for Russia's victory.
