Label Text:Columbus, Ohio-based artist Aminah Robinson devoted her career to telling and passing on the untold stories of her family, the black community where she grew up, and the often unsung contributions to American history by African Americans. As part of her 10 unique, handmade volumes of The Ragmud Series of books (acquired by the Toledo Museum of Art in 2007–8), Robinson told the story of her father’s ancestors’ journey from Angola, Africa to America as part of the Atlantic slave trade.

Her images and text expressively trace the horror of being kidnapped and forced on a dangerous journey across the ocean in overly-crowded ships to be sold into slavery as plantation workers. Between 1650 and 1860, an estimated 10 to 15 million Africans were captured, enslaved, and transported from West Africa to the Americas. Some of the works of art and decorative objects in this gallery likely came from households that owned slaves or that profited directly from the slave trade.
