Label Text:Highlighting a carefree activity with a hint of humor, this charming scene of young women and girls ice skating was published in Harper’s Weekly January 25, 1868. Created not long after the Civil War, the subject matter of this wood-engraving is dramatically different from the images he supplied to Harper’s as an imbedded artist at the front lines of the conflict.

Homer’s post-war images of the 1860s and 1870s explore ordinary life in both urban and country settings and cut across classes and race: children or adults enjoying games and leisure pursuits, factory workers, art students, farmers, teachers—images that often speak of social harmony and simple pleasures in the wake of a catastrophic war and an America undergoing monumental societal changes with the emancipation of enslaved African Americans.
