Label Text:Probably Catlett’s most famous image, Sharecropper embodies the artist’s main concerns: the strength and dignity of women, laborers, and African Americans. Catlett’s work is politically charged and actively promotes social change. She presents honest and intimate images of individuals often represented through stereotypes, or not typically represented at all. This image of an anonymous woman repurposes portraiture—an artistic genre most often used to elevate wealthy and influential white men—to reflect a broader experience of life.
