Label Text:Born in Menlo Park, California, in 1970, Kristin Satzman discovered her love for photography while attending the University of California at Santa Cruz. After graduating with a BFA in 1992, she traveled and photographed in the United States for three years. Upon returning to California she moved to San Francisco where she studied with photographer Philip Adam. She learned from the work of Edward Weston, Max Yavno, and Philip Adam that it’s the light more than the object being shot that makes the photograph work, and so is keenly aware of the coastal climate and the unique light that surrounds her.

Impressed at a young age by C. S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Satzman has always enjoyed seeking out hidden places. The photographs in this series developed out of a three-year exploration of urban parks and gardens in the San Francisco Bay area and the transfiguring light that shrouds the region.
