Label Text:Founded by Gijs Bakker and Renny Ramakers in 1993, Droog is one of the most innovative and experimental design houses in the world. The word “droog” translates to dry, and is a reference to both the simplicity and stereotypically Dutch wit underlying their products. In true Droog style, designer Tejo Remy uses an unexpected application of material as a simple solution to the structural problem posed by a chair.
Fashioned from the contents of 15 bags of rags, the composition of this piece is flexible; while it does come pre-assembled, the owner is invited to add rags of their own, building a piece of furniture that embodies a unique set of memories and intentions and takes on personal meaning for the user. The value of this piece lies not in the material itself—rags, ordinarily seen at the bottom of the laundry pile—but in the meaning constructed for it by the user in its new application.
