Label Text:One of the most important and influential African-American photographers of the 20th century, James Van Der Zee worked as a commercial photographer documenting the 1920s Harlem Renaissance in New York City with his portraits of Harlem citizens. In addition to depicting major religious, political, and artistic figures of the time, Van Der Zee also produced hundreds of photographs of Harlem’s growing middle class, like the family in this photograph.

While Van Der Zee enjoyed wide recognition in Harlem, it was not until 1968, at the age of 82, that his six decades of photographs were discovered by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and included in the groundbreaking exhibition, Harlem on My Mind.
