Label Text:Clarence Holbrook Carter (American, 1904–2000) is known for his large architectural paintings and symbolic landscapes of the American scene from the 1930s and ‘40s. After World War II, Carter’s artistic style shifted to a more surreal approach in his landscapes and figural paintings and prints. Starting in the 1960s Carter became fascinated with the floating ovoid shape and continued to use it in his work for the remainder of his career. He once commented that he regarded the shape as a symbol of “the human spirit striving for perfection.” By flattening the pictorial space and using bold colors, Carter’s human forms and ovoid shapes collide to illustrate a mysterious, dream-like state.
