Label Text:The notation at bottom left indicates that George Grosz intended this watercolor for the Galerie Cassirer, Berlin where he had solo exhibitions in 1929 and 1930. To support his family, Grosz began, as he wrote, "to paint a series of 'saleable' [pictures] … in such a way as to exclude the offensive subject" alongside the politically charged works he termed "my favorite subjects." Here, though he satirizes the self-indulgence of modern bourgeois life, the delicate colors and fluidly sensuous watercolor soften the acid edge of his social criticism.
