Label Text:When four African American college students sat down at a “whites only” lunch counter at the F. W. Woolworth store in Greensboro, North Carolina in March 1960, they began one of the first sustained sit-in demonstrations against segregation. Their actions ignited a string of youth-led sit-ins throughout the South, including one at the Memphis Public Library that same month. Forty-one demonstrators at that protest were arrested. Ernest Withers took this photo of the legal staff of the Memphis branch of the NAACP at the protestors’ arraignment.
