Label Text:Like many 19th-century American landscape painters, Jasper Francis Cropsey spent time in Europe, painting views that often differed strongly from the rugged vistas of the American landscape (see Cropsey’s Starrucca Viaduct, Pennsylvania in this gallery). In 1859, during a period when Cropsey was living in London, he visited the Isle of Wight off the southern coast of England. He there painted this scene of the small picturesque village of Bonchurch with his characteristic attention to light and detail. With its quiet lifestyle and stunning scenery, Bonchurch was a popular retreat for Victorian writers and artists (including Charles Dickens and Algernon Swinburne).
