Label Text:Scott Burton’s work challenges the distinction between ‘craft’ and ‘fine art.’ He had a democratic desire to make art that was both aesthetically striking and useful to people. To that end, he sculpted beautiful tables, chairs, and other furniture in a wide variety of styles and materials. Burton was also very interested in the way art could become a site for social interaction. The distance between these two chairs, as well as the way they are angled, was arranged by the artist to encourage conversation. Try them out—they are surprisingly comfortable!
