Label Text:Ed Wiener, a native New Yorker, began his career in artist circles in Provincetown and Greenwich Village, in the early days of the Abstract Expressionist movement of the late 1940s. This brooch is typical of his work in silver, his preferred material until the late 1940s.

The stylized figure of a dancer with her arm thrown over her head and her skirt pulled between her legs was inspired by the great 20th-century choreographer and dancer Martha Graham (1894–1991), who also was one of his clients.
