Label Text:Though based in Amsterdam, Mieke Groot’s work throughout her career has been informed and inspired by her frequent travels. This is particularly clear in the work she produced since her first of her many trips to West Africa in 1994. The form, color, and “skin” of this vase can easily be traced back to the sources of their inspiration. The dryness of the earth in some places in the African nations she visited, parched and cracked in the heat, is echoed in the color and texture. Groot based the vase on earthenware containers she saw in her African travels—closed forms, often with only a small access hole, that guard what is held within, keeping it safe from heat, insects, and other assailants.
