Label Text:This life-size portrait captures the likeness of middle-aged man with a sharp nose, rather bony features, and a bit of a squint. The head was cast separately and soldered into the neckline of a statue body, like the example illustrated here, though probably wearing a toga. Public portrait statues were commissioned by local city councils to express gratitude for donations or service. The statue would have stood on a pedestal inscribed with the man’s name and a brief history of his career.
