Label Text:The Coca Cola bottle has become a running thread throughout much of Irish sculptor Clifford Rainey’s work. Here, the iconic design is transformed into a segmented archetype, abraded and aged to the appearance of an archaeological relic. Rainey transforms the familiar shape, so strongly identified with American culture, into an object of awe and devotion by enlarging it and applying glass shards and nails, which are commonly used on fetishes or power figures—spiritually potent carved figures used in some African tribal religious practices.
