Label Text:Although based on the shape of a functional bowl, this elegant geometric form by Czech artist František Vízner is strictly a nonfunctional sculpture. Vízner does not work with hot glass; rather, he creates a drawing, selects a solid block of glass, and then spends hours contouring the glass by cutting, drilling, and grinding with diamond-tipped tools. He creates nuance in his works by varying the thickness of the glass. The result of his cold-working processes gives his massive forms a velvety surface and gemstone-like quality.
