Label Text:The elaborate shape and gold decoration of vines and birds gives this vase an exotic, Near Eastern feel. Though made in England, it was probably commissioned for sale in America. As wealthy Americans increased their travel abroad in the years after the Civil War, American society became more worldly and cosmopolitan. This vase would have appealed to a taste for the exotic inspired by travel to Europe, Asia, and Africa.
