Label Text:Born in Warren, Ohio, Van Gorder studied painting with William Merritt Chase in New York and later in Paris at the École des Beaux Arts. He worked a number of years in Paris and then in New York, gaining international renown for his colorful, Impressionist-inspired scenes. By 1903, he had settled permanently in Toledo, where he had once worked for the Toledo Blade newspaper (now called The Blade).

Though the exact date of this painting is unknown, Van Gorder likely painted it between 1894 and 1911—the same timeframe much of the nearby glass in this gallery was made.
